Our history

The creation of 1001fontaines was inspired by Louis Pasteur, who declared that “we drink 90% of our diseases”, leading our organization to focus on the provision of safe drinking water. In 15 years, we have demonstrated the efficiency and sustainability of this model.

Chay Lo, a young Cambodian engineer, along with Francois Jaquenoud and Virginie Legrand, design a small solar-powered water purification plant: the water kiosk.
11 pilot sites are set up in the Battambang province 2005-2007 11 pilot sites are set up in the Battambang province, covering approx. 60 villages in Northwest Cambodia. A pilot project is initiated in Madagascar 2008 A pilot project is initiated in Madagascar to test the model’s replicability in a different environment, where extreme poverty prevails. This replication is a success.

1001fontaines exceeds 200 water kiosks, with 190 in Cambodia and 19 in Madagascar, serving more than 500,000 beneficiaries.

1001fontaines launches two new programs in Vietnam and Myanmar, doubling the number of countries where it operates.
More than 750,000 beneficiaries 2019 More than 750,000 beneficiaries are served by 1001fontaines, including 285,000 children.
